SURF AND BALI: Sam from Australia got his first board when he was 8 years old!

Here in Finland everybody owns skates or skis in Australia they have never even seen those things but everybody has own surfboard – We would like to hear some more! Could you please tell us Sam?

WHO ARE YOU?
I am Sam

YOU ARE FROM OZ, WHERE ABOUT?
I'm from a small surf town on the east coast called Byron Bay. Heaps of hippies and surfers just chillin on the beach mainly.

WHAT IS YOUR VOCATION?
I am a graphic designer, but I run Learn to Surf Tours up the coast in summer

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SNOW?
Yeah I saw it first time when I was really young in England, then went snowboarding in Australia and New Zealand. Fell on my ass so many times! But i can do it now.

WHEN DID YOU START SURF?
I was about 8 years old when I got my first surfboard, but didnt get serious about it (like everyday) till i was about 12

DOES EVERYBODY SURF IN AUSTRALIA?
Not everybody, but most people like to get down the beach and have a go at least. I wish less people surfed! haha

WHAT KIND OF BOARD YOU HAVE NOW?
I have about 10 different board but my favourite is a little 5'9'' twin fin. Its red and goes fast.

IS IT EXPENSIVE HOBBY TO BE SURFER? OR DO YOU CALL IT HOBBY OR LIFESTYLE?
Its not expensive - surboard and boardshort/bikini is all you need. And some sunscreen for your white skin! haha.

I guess its a lifestyle - especially in the summer. Hangen out on the beach all day. Heaps of chicks in bikinis and not too much to worry about. But cold water is a different story.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN SURFED?
I have surfed all over the world, but there is so many more places to go! I have surfed in England, America, Fiji, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar... but I wanna surf in Finland! haha

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT? TELL US YOUR SECRET PLACE :)
Indonesia is pretty hard to beat. There are so many waves and places to discover. Lots of adventure to be had. I have a few secrets, but they wouldnt be secret if I told you right? haha

DO YOU KNOW MANY SCANDINAVIAN SURFERS? ANYONE FROM FINLAND?
Yeah I always meet cool people from Scandanavia in Bali. Nearly all of them wanna surf. Mostly from Sweden or Norway and sometimes Finland.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN EUROPE?
Yeah when I was younger with my family. Wanna go back there this year.

YOU HAVE BEEN LIVING IN BALI FEW TIMES! WHY SO?
I love Bali! The people, the culture, the food and of course the waves. It gets crowded these days but its usually ok if you get up early. Everybody likes to party and sleep late haha.

BALI IS YOUR NEIGHBOUR COUNTRY, LIKE WE HAVE ESTONIA OR SWEDEN! THERE ARE QUITE MANY AUSTRALIANS IN BALI, HOW DO YOU LIKE IT?
There are some people who come and don't respect the culture of Bali, but most are great. Australians have been coming to Bali for ever, and they love it. I think it we can learn alot from the people and culture here.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING IN BALI?
I will have to say the Indonesian food. It is so good - i can't eat anything that is not spicy anymore! haha

IS IT SAFE PLACE TO TRAVEL?
Yes for sure. Like everywhere in the world you have to be aware but most of the time you will be fine. The most dangerous thing in Bali is riding a motorbike - so think twice before you get on one!

WHEN YOU ARE GOING NEXT TIME?
Hope to be back there soon. Probably a couple of months. My sister just had a baby in Byron Bay, so I am loving being home with my family for now.

YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT WAVE LANGUAGE SCHOOL! WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT? PEOPLE FROM SNOW COUNTRY COME DOWN THERE FOR LEARNING SURF AND ENGLISH!
Yeah my friend Satu is the boss of that company! haha yeah i think its great - you will love the surfing lifestyle, and the culture of Indonesia. Just make sure you come with an open mind and an open heart.
